BKV Group has been the library Architect for the Hudson Area Library for their last 3 planning efforts to plan, program and renovate their library space. Through these strategic planning efforts, the Library Board recognized that their current facility just could not effectively be adapted to accommodate their vision for a connected, contemporary community-oriented library. The search began for a location and ended with the renovation of an existing building (previously designed by BKV Group in 1990). The 700 First Main facility is located with commanding views of the St. Croix River, one block off of the main street in historic downtown Hudson and adjacent to the Phipps Center for the Arts. The location opened up incredible opportunities for the library to be in the center of life in Hudson and offer joint programming with the Phipps Center. The building was renovated to expand the library to 20,000 GSF, incorporate expanding circulation / work room, increase computer offerings, provide a dedicated teen room, meeting room and children’s story room, all new amenities for the library. The renovation enhanced the sustainable features of the existing building strategically renovating only to the degrees necessary and working within the opportunities offered from natural light, views, and energy efficiencies that the building offered. The Library moved into their new home in the Summer 2010.
