Mill District City Apartments is a 5-story or 56 foot tall structure. Fundamentally, the building is composed of three wings, interlocked together to create a “U’ shaped configuration about a shared green outdoor courtyard. Composed of brick and stone, the two east-west wings have street-level walk-ups and step back at the top floor to provide rooftop terraces. The middle wing connects the two adjoining buildings and establishes the primary presence on Portland Avenue. Clad in glass and silver metal, the middle wing provides the main entrance and is defined by its horizontal pattern of the metal panels and smooth colored concrete panels at the recessed areas. With its functional, yet abstract arrangement of bays, balconies and canopies, this middle link generates its own unique modern identity while still respecting the historic context.
